Kenton Victory Hall Charitable Incorporated Organisation
Changes to how the village hall is governed

The Kenton Victory Hall Committee has agreed to start work to change how the hall is governed. What’s proposed is to change from an unincorporated charity to an incorporated charity. This explains what this means and gives links to more information. The hall is a registered charity which means we get various tax benefits and must work within our charitable objectives. When it was set up there was only one sort of charity (unincorporated) but now there are more. At present the 6 trustees or committee members of the hall have ultimately to accept personal liability for any losses the hall might make, and this has stopped a number of good people becoming trustees. By changing to incorporated status, personal financial liability ceases and we think we will be better able to attract new trustees. There are other benefits too, including an updated, modern constitution (eg allowing electronic meetings) and a better basis to apply for grants. It is important to make this change in legal status now to provide a sound base for the governance of the hall into the future. Users of the hall should not really notice any change. Click below for a short ‘Key Facts’ description of the new CIO or more information about the proposed constitution  of Charitable Incorporated Organisations.
There is also a link to the existing constitution which dates from 1992.

Update: 15th October 2020:  At the special general meeting to discuss the move of Kenton Victory Hall to CIO status held on 14th October 2020,
all parts of the resolution were passed and the committee will move to the next stage of discussing the application to become a CIO with the Charity Commission and will appoint an independent auditor to approve the accounts before transfer of the assets and liabilities to the new Charitable Incorporated Organsiation.

Users of the Hall will see no change with their hire with this largely constitutional change.
